UCI-MKPL Art Installation Competition
taspublications

The home to University Campus Infrastructure houses various departments, namely, UCI – Office of the Vice President (Campus Infrastructure); OED – Office of Estate and Development; OSHE – Office of Safety, Health & Environment and OES – Office of Environmental Sustainability.
‘Ventus’, the Latin word for ‘wind’ was given to the building due to its unique sustainable features which has integrated the concept of natural ventilation through the ‘wind scoop’ — a naturally ventilated atrium cum public space, designed by MKPL Architects Pte Ltd.
UCI is calling for a design competition for Department of Architecture students to design up to three site-specific public art installations for the space. The winning schemes will be further developed with the architects, Siew Man Kok and Lincoln Lewis, and built by the contractors.
This is a wonderful and rare opportunity for students to see their design ideas materialised while also learning to work with a real client (UCI, OED, OSHE, OES), and collaborate with an award-winning architectural firm. Students will also be working closely with installation artists Mr and Mrs Cheo Chai Hiang, artists-in-residence at Department of Architecture’s Tun Tan Cheng Lock Center.
1st Stage of Competition: 9 December 2011 – 1st stage submission by students of 1 or 2 sheets of A3 sketch design.
Final Stage of Competition: Early January 2012 – The 2nd stage submission should be more detailed and it should include a scale model.
Opening: August 2012 – All submitted entries in Stage 1 & 2 will be exhibited at the Wind Scoop.
Winning designs will stand a chance to win up to $800! Shortlisted entries will also win $200!
