TAS Guest Lecture Series 1: Design and Sustainability

Design and Sustainability – “Design for Sustainability and Sustainability for Design” To discuss on issues regarding sustainability in Singapore: the role of an architect in designing for sustainability or sustainability for design. The approaches of architects towards sustainability: not only in terms of economy and environment, but equity as well.

Speaker and Firm Profile

Vivien is a Certified Green Mark Manager with some 28 years’ experience as a Registered Architect in the design and implementation of a wide range of institutional, residential, industrial and mixed developments. As Director in RSP Architects Planners and Engineers (Pte) Ltd and also as its Environment & QA Director leading the firm’s Environmental Sustainability Unit, she is always inspired by environmentally-responsible design solutions and innovative strategies in green building technologies today. Vivien serves in several sustainability workgroups and chairs the Interior Systems Taskforce in SGBC’s Product Certification Scheme. She also serves in the Board of Examiners for BCA’s Specialist Diploma in Construction Management Programme and currently is also working hard on RSP’s BIM development for project delivery. For her commitment to sustainable building design over the years, she was recognized with the inaugural BCA-SGBC Green Architect Award 2011.

Synopsis on “Design For Sustainability” Vivien believes that everyone possesses the potential to create value for our sustainable future. She will share her experiences in building up green knowledge in a private practice and the approach that has delivered some recent green buildings in Singapore.

Alan Tay received a Master of Architecture degree in 2000 from the National University of Singapore. He is one of the founding partner of Formwerkz Architects, a practice known for its innovation and human-centric approach, rooted in the belief that architecture has the power to espouse more active engagement from man with his environment.

Formwerkz’s numerous projects have received critical acclaim both locally and internationally. Their works are featured in numerous regional and international publications. In 2010, the 3 design partners were selected by AUDE’s “20Under45: The Next Generation” exhibition, aim to promote a greater awareness and appreciation of design excellence. The Apartment House was listed in Monocle’s Singapore Survey 2009 as one of the “Best of the Modern”, alongside the likes of Paul Rudolph’s Colonnade and IM Pei’s OCBC Bank.
