Density, Urbanism, Publicness

This project reinterprets the Tanjong Pagar market’s hawker and market typology, aiming to enhance its overall functionality and sensory experience. An initial site analysis revealed key observations, such as the lack of integration between the market and hawker entities, the potential to introduce greenery to an existing green belt, and the opportunity to utilize hawker stalls for creating innovative programs and spaces. Further investigations have influenced the concept of developing a self-sustainable community that adapts to the temporality of the site.

Different forms were explored, leading to the implementation of various rooftop typologies tailored to the unique spatial qualities and experiences of proposed programs. These include larger roof canopies, which serve as the primary means of delineating different zones within the space, each with varying degrees of transparency to create distinct sensory ambiences.

The project is organized into three main clusters. The open plaza cluster functions as a flexible space for seasonal events like 'pasar malams,' supported by temporary stall units. The green production cluster features urban farms and production stalls that contribute to the overall commercial ecosystem. Finally, the main market cluster serves as the heart of the market, where produce and food are sold.

Special Thanks to Claire Wong.
