Perspective: Layered Planting Beds & Focal Area
The Transient Green is an urban, public space located on Cathay Green, Dhoby Ghaut. Inspired by the everchanging nature of plants through the sprouts emerging from the gravel floor, epiphytic ferns and moss growing on trees and weeds growing in the cracks of the concrete flooring, that are seen at the site. Additionally, Cathay Green and its surroundings are rich in history, yet there is rarely any evidence of its early beginnings left except for the remaining architecture and Konfrontasi memorial. The plants and history were all indications of time, leading to the concept of transient.
Concept: Transient & Abstract layers of time
The concept was then further developed by observing the characteristics, details and processes of a healthy to decaying leaf. The diagram was then converted into an abstract form and stacked together to show the layers of time that indicate an impermanent nature.
Axonometric & Plan
There are three design strategies that aim to resolve the lack of clear identity, foster a sense of community and inadequate circulation around the site. The first design strategy is adding pathways and a bridge to improve the circulation, connecting to the Cathay Building, YMCA and surrounding environment. The second design strategy is to introduce layers of agricultural planting beds to foster communities and provide an identity. The last design strategy is to capture impermanence through the movement of people, growth of plants, reflections of water, light and shadow, and the experiential art using temporary mist.
