Aggregation, Structure, Space

Dérive, or “drift”, is perceived as breaking through ordinary habits, and escaping to an unplanned journey through a landscape. While some may see parkour as a shallow, meaningless, extreme sport, parkour encompasses the very belief of Dérive. L’ Aventure explores that belief in architecture. It is a hub for parkourists to escape the realism of the world, to find chances of adventure in ordinary life while still offering outlets of static, technical training.

Tanjong Pagar, an extremely happening site, showcases the two worlds of old and new Singapore colliding while being populated with dozens of commercialized eateries located in the heart of downtown. Yet, as one experiences the busy nature of the front sides, the backs of such decorated facades (alleyways) become inhabited, and represent life from another perspective.

Understanding both concepts of Dérive and Tanjong Pagar’s alleyways enhances the creation of a habitation for parkourists without alienating the aggregation from the site. With reference to parkour parks, L’ Aventure offers an outlet of static and free-running parkour for a range of skilled parkourists.

Starting from a singular module, each unit proposes an unconventional way of living. By morphing, intersecting, and stacking the functionality of each room, a complete unit of habitation offers dynamic planes of training that are incorporated into a user’s daily life. When aggregated into the subsequent clusters of beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels, each user branches out to seek out the maximum Dérive, both in the architecture’s terrain and social scheme.

As one climbs through the skill ranks, so do they climb L’ Aventure; And as one makes technical parkour skills an instinct, the more they drift through the building, seeking and yearning for “the thrill of it all”.

Special Thanks to Wong Yi Xuen.
